# Updating the CLI

> Update the globally installed ScaleMax CLI safely and verify the installed version and existing client configuration.

Use the latest published CLI when you want current installer behavior.

**macOS / Linux**

```bash
npm install -g scalemax@latest
scalemax --version
# one-time alternative
npx scalemax@latest --version
```

**Windows PowerShell**

```powershell
npm.cmd install -g scalemax@latest
scalemax.cmd --version
# one-time alternative
npx.cmd scalemax@latest --version
```

Windows PowerShell blocks npm’s .ps1 launchers by default (“running scripts is disabled on this system”), so these commands use the .cmd launcher: npx.cmd, npm.cmd, scalemax.cmd. In Command Prompt you can leave out .cmd.

`scalemax models` always fetches the live list from the API; there is no local model cache to clear.

What the installer itself does is described in [Automatic CLI setup](https://docs.scalemax.pro/docs/npx-setup), and [Removing configuration](https://docs.scalemax.pro/docs/removing-configuration) covers reverting the files it wrote.
